Quentin Whitehouse of Fiatt, son of Todd Whitehouse, placed first overall out of eighty-eight participants at the East Peoria MTI welding competition. Quentin received a check for $500. Quentin and teammates Logan Corsaw, Jamonson Gibboney, Conner Harrold, Josh Slater, and Vinny Whitehouse have been working in the agricultural welding lab since February to prepare for competitions. We want to take time to thank our welding coach Tom Brown of Smithfield, who has donated his time and skills to coach the team. We also thank Hitchcock Scrap yard and Bob Spangler for scrap metal. MTI recruiter, Louie Schonauer, for the donation of welding rod and our friends at MidWest Airgas, Galesburg for welding supplies. Generally competitions consist of stick welding using 6011, 6013, and 7018 rod, welding in downhand, vertical, horizontal and overhead positions. MIG welding, brazing and oxyacetylene torching are included in the competitions. The Cuba FFA Welding team has attended five welding contest this year; Springfield, Carl Sandburg, Western IL Univ, Sect 12 and East Peoria contest. Quentin has won two: Sect 12 event and East Peoria event. He now qualifies for the State Welding competition at Parkland College in Champaign at the State FFA Ag Mechanics CDE May 13th.
